Students challenged to engineer new solutions in a food-themed coding contest from Texas Instruments

In celebration of National Engineers Week® (February 17-23, 2019), Texas Instruments (TI) is asking students to use TI technology to imagine and create a solution that improves a food process– from how it is created or transported, to how it is consumed. Maybe it’s an automated potato peeler, a revolutionary food storage product, or a smart nutrition solution; if it’s related to food, it’s eligible to win the second annual TI Codes Contest.

"At TI, we are hungry for future engineers, so we’re always looking for unique ways to increase students’ understanding of and interest in engineering and technology," said Peter Balyta, president of TI Education Technology. "After seeing the remarkable entries last year, we can’t wait to see what students create this this year as they get creative and compete against other teams around the country."

The contest is simple to enter and includes four rounds. In the first round, teams of up to five students, ages 13 to 19, submit a written proposal outlining the process or existing product they want to improve and their proposed solution. These proposals will be evaluated by a panel of judges from TI, who will determine which teams move on to the next round. As teams advance, they must start building their proposed design.

Ten semi-finalists will receive a TI graphing calculator, a TI-Innovator™ Hub and a $50 gift card for additional supplies to build their design and showcase it in a video. The Innovator, as it’s best known, is a palm-sized box with a built-in microcontroller that plugs into a TI graphing calculator and allows students to design and test creative solutions.

The public will then vote on their favorite semi-finalist design video and select the winner. Each member of the winning team receives a graphing calculator and TI’s calculator-controlled robotic vehicle, the TI-Innovator Rover. The teacher that sponsors the winning team also wins a $250 gift card to help cover the cost of future class activities. Even if teams don’t make it to the final round, they will still be entered to win random prizes aimed at sparking their interest in coding and engineering design.
